Fungi in humans

Skin fungi are fungi that grow in the skin, nails or hair of humans or animals. If the fungus spreads, we call that a fungal infection.

Fungi are everywhere, everyone comes into contact with them.

Fungi grow especially if the skin is moist and warm. Tight abrasive clothes washing much with soap can irritate the skin and stimulate the growth of the fungi. There are also fungi who use sugar or fat as a power source. This is yeasts.
Some species make the bread rise, others are used in the production of beer, but there are also fermenting fungi which grow in humans.

Fungi often use the skin ingredient keratin as a nutrient.

The most famous fungi are Candida and Pityrosporum, infections of the skin and mucous membranes.

There are very aggressive types of fungi. One common is Aspergillus. For people with little resistance they may be very dangerous. They mainly cause infections in the respiratory tract.
