Free radicals are substances that occur normally in metabolism, but extra with smoking, excessive exposure to sunlight and by invading pathogens (bacteria and viruses).
If they are abundant, free radicals damage the cells. This process is called oxidation. The rusting of a nail and a browning of apple are also examples of oxidation.
Flavonoids are antioxidants. The vitamins are substances that are similar, but not real. Flavonoids are primarily found in fruits and vegetables and in tea and red wine. Other nutrients with an antioxidant, vitamin C, E and carotene and the mineral selenium.
